Securing data - the battle with hackers who outwit online security
February 03, 2012
The challenge of securing online data is becoming ever more difficult. A recent BBC report highlights the challenges, in particular with respect to online banking.
The threat came from Man in the Browser (MitB) attacks, where the malware is contained in the web browser hidden from traditional AV and intercepts the traffic between the user and the website, changing what the user sees and crucially what is entered. This means that the criminals can create transactions to steal money, copy data and all while hiding the activity from the user.
This can happen because traditional AV relies on signatures and pattern detection, and the latest malware isn't immediately detected (such as in Zero Day Attacks). The damage is done before AV catches up. Two Factor Authentication helps, but that simply validates who the user is - and that's not the problem, as the malware will be on their PC and runs when the real user logs in.
Of course, this isn't just restricted to banking. It affects any secure online resource, from CRM systems like Salesforce.com to online web email like Outlook Web Access to collaborative portals like Microsoft SharePoint. Data is at risk here, wherever in the cloud it may be.
Web sites cannot rely on their users to be security experts. They need security that follows the web model: anytime, anywhere, without permanent software installations. However, there is a solution.
Protect On Q from Quarri is the first solution that gives web sites the power to secure the browser on the endpoint, without permanently altering the client PC. Using unique agent technology, the armored browser shields sensitive data from key loggers, frame grabbers, session hijacking, cache miners, and other malware, while blocking inbound attacks as well.
This means that Protect On Q enforces security in only the secured browser, and when the user logs out of the protected web application, POQ exits and cleans itself up.
