FBI warns of new fraud scam
January 06, 2012
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has issued a warning about a new Zeus malware attack targeting commercial bank accounts, ultimately leading to incidents of corporate account takeover. The Zeus variant used: a malware called Gameover, which the FBI says is able to defeat several forms of dual-factor authentication. Unusually, this attack is targeted commercial organisations and their bank accounts, rather than just consumers, and poses a severe risk to those companies and their funds. The malware will log access details, even with an ability to bypass multi factor authentication, and so repeat the hack whenever a user logs into their account. Dave Draycott, UK Country Manager for Quarri, comments that "lots of our organisations could be suffering this kind of exploit, and it would cause significant problems and bad PR if made public. The browser is unprotected once malware is on the network, and the Protect on Q (PoQ) solution from Quarri takes over when traditional AV fails. Having an additional layer of defence alongside AV is essential, and PoQ ensures that whever malware is present, the browsing session and data remains secure - without any complex or risky user involvement".
