Once in a while we come across a company whose idea and products just make sense. Ncomputing is such a company and it may take some time until you will hear more about its products, but we do believe that the firm has what it takes to popularise cloud computing for the masses and become Intel's biggest threat yet.
We are talking about the ability to split one PC into possibly dozens of sub 5-watt computers with a cost of less than $100 each. To us, it is the first convincing cloud computing idea that has the potential to reach more users than any other computing product before. Thin Is Definitely In: NComputing has been racking up the sales wins in the past couple years, helping a host of private and public sector organisations save millions of dollars in up-front and ongoing support costs on deploying more than 1 million thin-client PC seats around the world. NComputing's X-series or L-series mainboards slot into a standard $300-$500 desktop PC, which functions as a server that uses the company's proprietary software to power between seven and 32 desktop display set-ups.
Media streaming and audio performance, long a bugbear for thin client technologies, is actually pretty decent on NComputing installations. The best part for system integrators and resellers? Hardware gross margins in the 25-30 percent territory -- something the channel hasn't seen in years.
